Negroni

Equal parts, no argument.

Gin, Campari and sweet vermouth in equal measure, stirred, over ice, with orange. It is the most gin-forward classic there is, which makes it a good test of a bottle.

You need

Serves one

  • 30ml gin
  • 30ml Campari
  • 30ml sweet vermouth
  • A wide strip of orange peel

Method

  1. Stir all three with ice in a mixing glass until properly cold.
  2. Strain over a large cube in a rocks glass.
  3. Express the orange peel over the surface and drop it in.

Our suggestion: a coastal or maritime gin changes this drink more than any other classic — the salinity cuts the bitterness and it comes out drier. Worth trying before you decide the Negroni is not for you.
